"Robert MaGaw is successful worldwide as an artist, finding critical acclaim in New York City, Paris, Asia and Europe. The demand for Robert’s paintings has steadily increased over the years and his art may be found in private collections internationally, as well as corporations such as Georgia-Pacific, McDonalds and the exclusive Amman Resort in Bali, Indonesia. His solo exhibitions at fine arts galleries in New York, Paris, Palm Beach, Florida, Lake Placid and Bucks County, Pennsylvania attracted buyers and loyal collectors who acquired most every piece on exhibit.

Critics describe his style as impressionist, tonal and even “dreamlike”. Born in Ohio, Robert’s early love of nature was reflected in sketches of the woodlands and meadows that surrounded his boyhood home. “My first recollection of ‘art’ was a framed print that hung in our family living room. It was a landscape with mountains and soaring pines. I drew that scene over and over and began to understand a little about line, color and shading. Drawing, then painting, became a different way of ‘speaking’ and it was a language I became eager to learn. I knew I wanted to be a painter and have tried to be a worthy student ever since. Though the lessons may at times be difficult and knowledge elusive, as Michelangelo once said: ‘I am still learning’.”

After returning from Vietnam, Robert moved to New York City where his innate sense of style earned him a successful career as an architect and as a designer of interiors, textiles, furniture and graphics. Painting, however, always remained his passion and he began painting full time in 1994. Robert was encouraged by a well-known artist to enter a juried show of French and American painters gathered in New York. Winning this show and seeing his painting receive the highest auction price not only solidified Robert’s career decision, but brought him several prominent commissions and paved the way for his future in art. The next year, over 80 paintings were acquired by Lake Placid Lodge where his landscapes adorn guest rooms, cabins and the Great Camp Gallery. Though Robert has traveled extensively and found inspiration from the Rocky Mountains to bayous of Louisiana and from the rivers of Africa and the tropics of southeast Asia, he finds most themes for his paintings right in his own backyard.

Upon returning to live in his hometown in 2016, the central theme of his painting took on fresh significance. “Beauty exists everywhere. The subjects of my paintings are often ignored by those of us who pass by them every day. But, in that one never-come-again moment, when they’re splashed with the fresh light of dawn or the fiery glow of a sunset, that ordinary scenery takes on a grandeur that can be breath-taking. I simply try to capture as much of it as I can before it all fades away.”
